Yoga teachers, now, more than ever, the world needs what you have to offer. But it can be all too easy to get caught up in the urgency of a shifting industry. How can you move beyond fear and anxiety, and begin sharing from a place of confidence and clarity? Join yoga educator Barrie Risman—author of Evolving Your Yoga: Ten Principles for Enlightened Practice and creator of The Power of YOU—for a four-session on-demand workshop to renew your resolve, reconnect with your roots, and realign with your vision and purpose as a teacher. Barrie will facilitate expert discussions, peer support, and deep self-inquiry to help you get clear on the meaning yoga holds for you and those you serve. As a result, you’ll design a road map on how to bring your unique voice forward, and in these uncertain times step forward as an uplifting teacher in your community.
Intention:
You’ll re-enliven your relationship to yoga and get grounded in your purpose and vision as a teacher. By the end of this workshop, you’ll possess a personal toolbox packed with inspiration and motivation to respond to the needs of the moment and move forward with clarity, courage and confidence.
Objectives:
- Explore and articulate how your yoga practice is benefiting you and share that in an authentic, meaningful way.
- Contemplate a key teaching or understanding from yoga (or another sacred tradition) that feels alive and important to you right now. (You can choose your own or Barrie will provide one for you.)
- Define (or redefine) your core purpose—your “why,” your values, your vision—as a teacher.
- Identify strategies to overcome obstacles and disempowering mindsets in order to stay connected to your purpose as you move forward.
- Re-enliven your relationship to yoga to find inspiration, motivation, and clarity to respond to the needs of the moment and move forward with courage and confidence.
- Offer and receive peer support and brainstorm creative solutions for questions and challenges fellow teachers may have right now (through breakout groups)
In each session, you’ll:
- Begin with a centering meditation
- Enjoy a lecture based on the session’s topic
- Be guided in a process of self-inquiry
- Share with peers in small breakout groups in order to discuss challenges and brainstorm solutions
- Share findings with the larger group (optional)
- Receive a contemplation assignment for the next week
Curriculum:
You’ll follow a four-part process that answers the questions: Why yoga? Why now? Why me?
Week 1: Why Yoga?
- Acknowledge the reality of this moment in time, identify the challenges and questions it presents, and determine where you fit into it.
- Re-enliven your connection and commitment to yoga by reflecting on how yoga has been serving you personally.
- Identify and articulate the most potent teachings and practices that are supporting you and the value and meaning yoga holds for you right now.
- Contemplate a key teaching or understanding from yoga (or another sacred tradition) that feels alive and important to you.
- Determine how you’ll share the select teachings with others in an authentic, meaningful way.
Week 2: Why Now?
- In this moment there’s a shedding of old structures and an opportunity to usher in a new yoga world of our choosing. Determine the responsibility (and possibility) of this time for yoga teachers to step forward into service right now.
- Outline where and how you want to focus your teaching. What are the helpful perspectives and lessons from the tradition that you are called to bring forward to uplift and support your community? What are the practices you are inspired to share and how do you want to share them?
- Reflect on what’s working in how you’ve adapted your teaching over the past few months.
- Discover what you want to create and invite into your practice and teaching, and what you’re ready to let go of because it’s no longer serving you.
- Identify new areas or practices you’d like to explore to enrich your connection to yoga.
Week 3: Why You?
- Trace the roots that shaped your experience of yoga in order to illuminate your story and history in yoga to come back to the essence of what’s true for you and who you are as a teacher.
- Define (or redefine) your core purpose as a teacher: Your “why” and the values you stand for and what brings you the most energy in teaching.
- Articulate the qualities that define your unique “brand” of yoga, along with the key values that form the bedrock of your teaching.
- Explore how to bring this all out in your teaching and marketing.
Week 4: Putting It All Together
- Brainstorm creative solutions and possibilities in ever-changing circumstances.
- Identify the habits, beliefs, fears, and anxieties that disempower you and troubleshoot how to overcome the inner obstacles that keep you from sharing your wisdom.
- Identify reliable renewal strategies for energy and resilience.
- Create a clear action plan to stay grounded in your purpose as you move forward.
- Present and get input on your plan in small peer groups.
